Daily home dental care is what keeps your teeth and gums healthy between checkups. At Marysville Family Dentistry, we encourage a consistent routine that controls plaque, prevents cavities, and supports strong gums—because what happens at home each day has the biggest impact on long-term oral health.
Brush twice a day for two minutes using a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. Pay special attention to the gumline and the back molars, where buildup tends to collect. Gentle, thorough brushing is more effective than scrubbing hard, which can irritate gums and contribute to enamel wear. Many patients benefit from an electric toothbrush for more consistent plaque removal.
Clean between your teeth once a day. Floss is the classic choice, but it isn’t the only tool. Interdental brushes, floss picks, and water flossers can be excellent alternatives—especially for patients with braces, bridges, implants, or tight spacing. If your gums bleed when you start flossing, that’s often a sign of inflammation; consistent cleaning usually improves it over time.
Mouth rinses can provide added support. An alcohol-free antimicrobial rinse may help reduce bacteria, and fluoride rinses can strengthen enamel for patients at higher cavity risk. Your dentist can recommend what’s best for your situation.
Your diet also matters. Frequent snacking, sugary beverages, and acidic drinks can increase cavity risk and soften enamel. Choose water often, limit between-meal sugars, and rinse with water after coffee or acidic foods when possible. If you struggle with dry mouth, let your dental team know—saliva is a key natural defense against decay.
If you clench or grind your teeth, a custom nightguard may protect against wear, chips, and jaw soreness. Marysville Family Dentistry can recommend the right tools, products, and techniques so your home routine supports a healthier, more confident smile every day.
